Posted: October 7, 2008
In what may mark its most environmentally progressive action taken to date, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has passed three far-reaching green development ordinances on October 7, 2008. Implementation should result in a significant reduction in peak storm flows and pollutant loads, augmentation of existing groundwater supplies and conservation of water and energy. More... |

Gov. Vetoes Derelict Fishing Gear Bill SB 899 — A Troubling Disappointment
Posted: October 1, 2008
Citing costs and budget constraints, Governor Schwarzenegger kills SB 899, a collaboratively crafted, bipartisan bill that would have addressed CA ocean pollution caused by lost and abandoned fishing gear. Ironically, the veto follows the Governor's support of an ocean action plan that includes derelict fishing gear reduction components. The veto leaves California as the only Pacific coast state without some type of comprehensive derelict fishing gear program. More... |

2008 End of Summer Beach Report Card — State Water Quality Excellent, But Gov. Axes Monitoring Funds
Posted: September 25, 2008
Today, Heal the Bay released its 2008 Summer Beach Report Card along with a new version of their popular online Beach Report Card. Overall, a second summer of drought and infrastructure enhancements have contributed to positive results statewide. But in a disturbing twist, ocean users are now facing increased health risks because of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s unilateral decision this week to eliminate all state funding for beach water quality monitoring. Monitoring in the state’s 15 coastal counties stands to be eliminated or severely curtailed because of the nearly $1 million cutback. Check back for more information on this latest development.

State’s Marine Debris Report Sets Lofty Goals
Updated: July 29, 2008
In a report released July 29, 2008, by the state Ocean Protection Council, ambitious goals for eliminating plastic bags, polystyrene food packaging, cigarette butts and other items from local waters are outlined. Heal the Bay consulted extensively with authors of the report, and at the same time, has worked successfully over the past two years to help enact legislation that significantly curbs the amount of manmade debris entering our taxed seas. Heal the Bay will continue to turn the OPC plan into a reality that all Californians can be proud of.
