Steelhead Barrier and Habitat Report PDF:1.51MB Released: June 2005 This report is the culmination of four years of mapping steelhead habitat and instream barriers that prevent the upstream migration of endangered steelhead trout in the Malibu Creek watershed. The GPS mapping data occurs over 70 miles of streams throughout the watershed. The report assesses the quality of steelhead habitat between barriers and prioritizes the top ten barriers to be removed within the watershed that will provide the best chance for this endangered fish to avoid extinction. This study was funded and managed by the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and the State Coastal Conservancy.
The Freshwater and Marine Team Field Guide PDF:12.13MB Released: February 2003
The illustrated Freshwater and Marine Team Field guide is available to provide educational information about watersheds and the marine environment, including step-by-step procedures for measuring marine and freshwater quality. Use this guide along with the two documents below as guidance for starting, equipping, and managing citizen monitoring programs.
Shattering the Myths of Volunteer Monitoring PDF:4.47MB Released: August 2000 This report provides a model format for non-profit environmental organizations, government agencies, and municipalities to design and manage a volunteer program for monitoring in their local watershed. Heal the Bay believes the Stream Team Program is a useable model for the collection of high quality, accurate, and reliable data that is applicable to all watersheds. The model program provides specific information regarding volunteer selection, effective training methods, monitoring techniques for different pollutants and impairments to a stream, equipment recommendations and associated costs, and data collection and management.
The Malibu Creek Watershed: A Framework for Monitoring, Enhancement, and Action PDF:13.71MB Released: August 1998 This document details the issues and areas of concern facing the watershed. It includes a watershed assessment, and establishes a comprehensive monitoring framework for collection of the information needed by decision makers to protect its diverse natural resources. Moreover, the document contains policy and planning strategies to protect the watershed for future generations. The project went on to establish the Malibu Creek Stream Team, Heal the Bay's renowned citizen monitoring program. The document was created for Heal the Bay by the 606 Studio, with project funding from the California State Coastal Conservancy. The 606 Studio is a consortium of faculty and graduate students in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The Studio promotes the application of advanced methods of analysis and design with particular emphasis on the preservation and restoration of sensitive natural systems.
