Eyes in Sanctuaries Community Science Event
November 11 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Celebrating 20 years of LiMPETS and 50 years of NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries with a free Sand Crab Community Science Event
Friday, November 11, 2022, 9:30am-11:30am, at Heal the Bay Aquarium
Join Heal the Bay Aquarium, LiMPETS, and NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries as we celebrate 20 years of LiMPETS and 50 years of NOAA Eyes in Sanctuaries on Friday, November 11, 2022.
Participants will meet at Heal the Bay Aquarium for a brief workshop on sand crab community science, and then head over to the north side of the Santa Monica Pier to do some hands-on data collection at the Santa Monica Beach shoreline. This event FREE event is open to all ages!
Beneath your toes at the beach are thousands of sand crabs. This species can tell scientists a lot about the sandy beach ecosystem. For example, a low number of sand crabs during a collection can indicate poor water quality or signal that there are a high number of predators in the area snacking on the sand crabs. By simply counting these overlooked creatures, scientists can make conclusions about the entire ecosystem’s overall health. RSVP to the event and we’ll “sea” you on the sand.
PLEASE NOTE: All participants must sign the liability waiver .
PHOTO WAIVER: After registration, we will share a photo waiver for participants for NOAA’s image use. If you do not wish to be in any photos, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or inform staff when you arrive for the event.
Attire: Please wear comfortable attire, and plan for being outdoors for the hands-on community science data collection. We recommend close-toed shoes or beach-appropriate footwear, sunscreen, and water bottles to stay hydrated.
