Nothin But Sand Cancelled- Try Personal Cleanups For January

January 15 @ 10:00 am

Due to recent surges in cases of COVID-19, we have decided to cancel this month’s Nothin’ But Sand beach cleanup on January 15, 2022.

We believe it is healthy to be outside volunteering, just not in large groups at this time. In order to keep our community safe, we would like to decentralize our Nothin’ But Sand beach cleanup on Jan. 15, 2022. Instead of having hundreds of folks volunteering together at one location, we are canceling this event and encouraging you to take part in a personal beach cleanup anytime in January of 2022.

**See below for instructions on how to get your community service/volunteer hours**

Small groups (under 25 people), family, and individuals can clean any beach, at any time, please just follow these instructions:

  • Watch this safety video or read our safety talk.
  • Grab an old bucket and some gardening gloves, and hit any beach, trail, or neighborhood park.
  • Track the trash you collect with the Marine Debris Tracker App or our Data Card (download, print, and bring the Data Card to your cleanup).
  • Email Emely Garcia, Beach Programs Manager with a screenshot of the trash you tracked in the App or a photo of the Data Card filled out.
  • Don’t forget to post your personal Nothin’ But Sand cleanup pics using hashtag #healthebay and tag us @healthebay so we can share your awesome efforts with our communities.

If you are the leader of a large group (over 25 people), please contact us at egarcia@healthebay.org.

For community service hours, participants must follow the steps below. If you do not follow these steps exactly, you will not qualify for community service hours:

  1. To qualify for community service hours, please send a photo of yourself or your group at your cleanup location (this can be a selfie at your cleanup location) to Emely Garcia. Please include the location name (beach name and city/state) and the date and time. We will then send you a community service form to complete.
  2. Save a screenshot of the trash you tracked in the Marine Debris Tracker App or a photo of your filled-out Data Card after your cleanup (download the Marine Debris Tracker App or download our Data Card to print).
  3. Email us the screenshot or photo of your cleanup data and the community service form, if applicable, to Emely Garcia.
  4. After these steps are completed, we will send you a signed Heal the Bay community service form (2-hour credit max. will be provided).

We apologize for any inconvenience this event cancellation causes. We are taking this action out of an abundance of caution. Please protect yourself and stay informed by following guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

We host Nothin’ But Sand beach cleanups every month, so don’t worry about missing this one. Sign up for Heal the Bay’s monthly newsletter to get notified of future dates and locations.
