By controlling sea urchin populations\, they protect kelp forests and help sustain hundreds of species along California’s coast. However\, after the 2013 outbreak of sea star wasting disease\, populations plummeted by more than 90%\, leaving them functionally extinct in much of the state. \nNow\, hope is on the horizon. Through the AZA SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) initiative\, Heal the Bay Aquarium and partners nationwide are working to restore these sea stars to the wild and revive balance in the kelp forest ecosystem.

SUMMARY:"To Save Our Coast" FREE Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Heal the Bay on Saturday\, July 20 at 6 PM at Patagonia Santa Monica for a free screening of “To Save Our Coast: Proposition 20 and the Creation of the California Coastal Commission.” Discover the powerful history behind the California Coastal Act and how it continues to protect public access to our beaches and coastline today. \nAfter the film\, hear from local community organizers and environmental leaders who are working to keep California’s coast open\, protected\, and accessible for all. \nSeats are limited! Reserve your spot today. \nTickets \n  \nAbout the Film\nThe 1970s are often referred to as the environmental decade\, and perhaps no action better exemplifies the aims and achievements of this period than California’s Proposition 20. Passed by voters in 1972\, Prop. 20 established the regulatory body that became known as the California Coastal Commission – an agency widely recognized as the international flagship of coastal regulation. This documentary tells the story of that grassroots campaign through the voices of those who waged it\, showing how a diverse group of underdogs took on the state’s most powerful corporations to save the California coast for the people.
