Advancement Internship (Unpaid)

Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds of Greater Los Angeles safe, healthy and clean. To fulfill our mission, we use science, education, community action, and advocacy.

The summer internship will be offered to an individual with an interest in gaining philanthropic fundraising experience and requires strong interpersonal skills and a self-starter attitude.

Our Advancement department handles all fundraising efforts for Heal the Bay’s annual 4.1-million-dollar budget. The Corporate Liaison Intern will join our team of 4 to assist in current and future fundraising efforts.



The Corporate Liaison intern will work with the Advancement department to research, vet, and match prospective corporate sponsors with Heal the Bay’s mission and programs, including the Beach Report Card, River Report Card, and The Heal the Bay Aquarium at the Santa Monica Pier;

Strengthen ties with local entrepreneurs and greater business community (e.g., Silicon Beach, green technology firms);

Pitch Heal the Bay’s corporate programs via phone calls and email, including Suits on the Sand, to new business prospects, including high-profile entertainment, consumer goods, and professional sports entities; and,

Work with Advancement Department to steward new corporate relationships.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in fundraising and relationship-building via donor and corporate communications.

The Corporate Liaison intern will work out of Heal the Bay’s main office offices in Santa Monica. Interns work a 16-20-hour week, with at least 10 weeks of work required during the period from mid -June to the end of August. Interns have a supervisor and are required to attend fundraising events and Suits on the Sand cleanups as needed, and must submit mid-summer and end-of-summer status updates on current activities.



To be considered for an Heal the Bay Internship, students must meet the following criteria:

Required Qualifications:

Degree program:  BA or BS

Cumulative GPA:  3.5 or higher

Current status:  Junior or above; recent grads eligible to apply

Area of study:  Business or Communications preferred

Must have the right to work permanently in the United States

  • Computer literacy, including MS Word and Excel
  • Outgoing personality, professional demeanor
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Comfortable with making cold calls
