About the Role
Heal the Bay serves as the Los Angeles County Coordinator for California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD), which is part of the international cleanup effort organized by the Ocean Conservancy. Heal the Bay hosts between 50-70 individual cleanup sites across the region. Each site is a unique expression of the surrounding community. This year, Coastal Cleanup Day takes place on Saturday, September 21, 2024. The Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator works closely with the Outreach, Communications, Advancement, and Aquarium teams to coordinate the event.
Heal the Bay is seeking a well-organized, charismatic, and responsible individual capable of working in a fast-paced environment to recruit volunteer Site Captains, track and coordinate cleanup sites, and manage event logistics. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently but also enjoys collaborating as part of a team. Reporting to the Beach Programs Manager, the Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator will help create and develop tools to ensure an inclusive event for all Angelenos.
This role is expected to begin on May 13, 2024, and will run through October 11, 2024.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Beach Program Manager to:
- Coordinate all logistics of Heal the Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Day, including managing 50+ cleanup sites and obtaining cleanup permits.
- Train and support volunteer Site Captains and staff before Coastal Cleanup Day to ensure that each site has the necessary tools to run safely and smoothly.
- Manage the Coastal Cleanup Day volunteer and contact database in Salesforce.
- Assist in creating brochures, flyers, and other print materials using Canva (based on your knowledge), including the Coastal Cleanup Day Wrap-Up book.
- Schedule and facilitate volunteer training sessions for Site Captains.
- Address logistical concerns via phone, virtual meetings, direct messages, and email with internal staff, volunteers, and event partners.
- Mandatory attendance at some weekend and evening events, especially on September 21, 2024.
- Support cleanup activities as needed throughout the summer to familiarize oneself with Heal the Bay’s cleanup flow and expectations.
- Present captain and volunteer recruitment opportunities such as Speakers Bureau talks for corporate groups, civic clubs, schools, etc.
- Make virtual and in-person presentations to community leaders and groups to promote participation in CCD.
- Attend weekly staff meetings, typically held every other Wednesday evening and Thursday and Friday mornings. Virtual attendance options are available for some meetings.
Qualifications:
- High cultural competency, with DEI training experience preferred.
- Well-organized with careful attention to detail and the ability to meet hard deadlines.
- Comfortable communicating effectively with small and large groups of volunteers, community groups, members of the press, and government offices, both in person and virtually.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for the environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
The ideal candidate will have experience and/or a strong interest in:
- Being bilingual in English and Spanish and/or Korean.
- Using Salesforce or similar CRM software.
- Public speaking and leading training workshops.
- Creating content for website pages, forms, videos, graphics, flyers, gifs, and social media posts across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, MyEmma, Salesforce, Google Analytics, etc.).
- Creating culturally relevant social media or digital campaign materials for members of the Los Angeles County community.
- Assisting with data tracking for volunteers and marine debris.
Wages & Schedule
This position is a non-exempt, seasonal role with a compensation of $25 per hour, excluding benefits but including accrued sick time.
This part-time position requires an average of 20 hours per week, increasing before the event. The employment period spans from May 13 to October 11, 2024, with some nights and weekends required.
