Every Beach Deserves to Come Back.

A few years ago, the beach at the Santa Monica Pier reappeared on our annual Beach Report Card as one of the most polluted in the state. At Heal the Bay, we believe a day at the beach should not make anyone sick, that’s why we’re on a mission to clean up our home beach and we’re celebrating that mission right here on the sand.

Millions of people visit the Santa Monica Pier and its beach every year. Most visitors don’t know they are swimming at the most bacteria-impacted beach in California.

Heal the Bay has been grading this beach, and nearly every beach in California, for decades. Beyond just tracking the problems, we are leading the scientific work to solve them.

Our scientists have been out in the water collecting data to find the source of bacteria so we can stop it. Together with the City of Santa Monica, we’re leading the Santa Monica Pier Task Force: a first-of-its-kind collaborative bringing together government agencies, scientists, businesses, and community members to advance real, lasting solutions at this beach and creating a model to spread far beyond this one beach.
