March Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup
March 15, 10 AM – 12 PM @ Dockweiler State Beach, Imperial Hwy Tower 52
Join us on Saturday, March 15, at Dockweiler State Beach for a day of action, education, and community impact.
After the recent Los Angeles wildfires, Heal the Bay has worked closely with local leaders to provide the latest updates on water quality, beach safety, and environmental recovery. Now, we’re excited to welcome volunteers back for our monthly Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup!
Explore our new Beach Talk Tent, where you can connect with Heal the Bay’s friendly outreach team to learn how fires affect our coastal environment and what we can do to protect it.
March Nothin’ But Sand Safety Information
Based on the latest available data, Heal the Bay strongly advises avoiding beaches within the burn zone, which extends from Las Flores State Beach to the northern boundary of Santa Monica State Beach at Montana Ave. Dockweiler Beach is not within this affected area, but south-moving ocean currents have been observed to be carrying debris and potentially harmful contaminants toward southern beaches, so we are urging caution until we have more data. We remind all participants to follow our Nothin’ But Sand safety protocols:
- Remain out of the water and above the tide line
- Wear protective, weather-appropriate clothing, including closed-toe shoes.
- Sharp debris, like nails, have been found on the beach. Do not touch anything with bare hands, and do not dig in the sand, even if you are wearing gloves.
- Avoid handling any potential fire debris that may have washed ashore. Steer clear of ash, which can mix with sand and water, often appearing as black sludge near the waterline.
- Nitrile gloves, wet wipes, and masks will be available.
- Follow all safety instructions from our team throughout the cleanup. If you encounter anything that looks unsafe, notify a Heal the Bay staff member immediately.
Your safety is our top priority. We trust our volunteers to make informed decisions based on the latest available information. If you are uncomfortable joining us on the sand this month, please check back for upcoming clean-ups. Visit our Ash to Action blog for updates as new data becomes available. Thank you for your support and cooperation. We look forward to seeing you on the sand!
