About the Position

Heal the Bay’s Outreach Coordinator is an integral part of the Safe Clean Water Program (SCWP) Team, supporting the work in both Central and South Santa Monica Bay Watershed areas. Duties and responsibilities center around educating and building inclusion and meaningful community engagement in pursuit of SCWP Program Goals. The SCWP Outreach Coordinator ensures the Safe Clean Water Program contract deliverables are met including, but not limited to, giving presentations to community groups, representing the program at community fairs, attending coalition meetings and community outreach through a variety of methods.

Expectations and Responsibilities

    • Taking initiative and your deep understanding of western Los Angeles County to strategically build community knowledge of SCWP goals.
    • Promoting through a variety of outreach mechanisms to ensure that neighborhoods councils, local governments, community leaders participate in events.
    • Assist Watershed Coordinators of both South and Central Santa Monica Bay to develop and implement educational activities and trainings for interested parties.
      Assist in creating content and translating existing materials for Spanish language outreach.
    • Run our tabling program and represent Safe Clean Water Program at inland/urban community festivals.
    • Help solicit and execute bi-lingual (Spanish/English) print, radio and television coverage.
    • Review invoices, quarterly newsletters, and reports.
    • Recruit schools, public agencies, businesses, elected officials, and community groups to participate in SCWP inland outreach events.
    • Collect Community Surveys while in the field.
    • Set up meetings with interested parties and watershed coordinators, and make sure that our interested parties database is up-to-date.
    • Assist Programs Department events when necessary.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Outstanding communication and presenting skills in both English and Spanish, both oral and written.
  • Strong leadership and coordination skills for working with community groups and faith-based and social justice organizations.
  • Passion for the environment and environmental justice issues.
  • Excellent people skills and a passion for working with the public.
  • Well-organized and able to work on several projects simultaneously, both independently and as a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Valid driver’s license required–driving to outreach events and meetings will be required.
  • Familiarity with communities of Central and or South Santa Monica Bay Watershed area.

Hours and Compensation

$19.50 – $20.50 an hour
This position is a full-time, nonexempt position. Compensation includes accrued vacation and sick time as well as retirement/health/dental/vision/life benefits.

About the Position

The Beach Programs Manager is part of Heal the Bay’s outreach team and manages some of Heal the Bay’s most well-known programs, our beach cleanups. The Beach Programs Manager is responsible for running monthly public beach cleanups, our Adopt-A-Beach program, corporate beach cleanups, and, with the Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator, manages Coastal Cleanup Day for L.A. County. This is an excellent leadership opportunity that provides experience in community outreach, event planning, and non-profit work.

Expectations & Responsibilities

    • Manage monthly community beach cleanups called “Nothin’ But Sand” which includes scheduling, training, and standard operating procedures.
    • Manage Adopt-A-Beach program (scheduling 300+ cleanups per year / budgets, permits, reports etc.)
    • Oversee Suits on the Sand (Corporate) Cleanups, including scheduling, training, and standard operating procedures.
    • Manage staff members, interns, and volunteers who have responsibility for beach programs.
    • Manage overall Coastal Cleanup Day logistics and budget for 10,000+ volunteers and 60+ cleanup sites, including recruiting and training site captains.
    • Manage the Marine Debris Database; ensure data quality; produce reports to be used for advocacy and policy work.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with other agencies and organizations in the community, including the LA County Dept. of Beaches & Harbors.
    • Coordinate Beach Emergency Response and Earth Month activities
    • Make presentations throughout the year to community groups, neighborhood councils, city councils, schools, and businesses about Coastal Cleanup Day, watershed awareness, and ocean health
    • Assist in fundraising efforts for all associated beach programs
    • Represent Heal the Bay at public events & meetings, media opportunities, and stakeholder meetings
    • Participate actively in organization campaigns and programming, including activities at Heal the Bay Aquarium

About the Position

If the beach is your happy place, this is the job for you! The Beach Programs Associate is a part-time position responsible for coordinating and executing all of Heal the Bay’s beach cleanup programs, including Suits on the Sand, Adopt-A-Beach and our monthly third Saturday public cleanup, Nothin’ But Sand. We welcome thousands of Angelinos to the beach each year to participate in caring for our coast. Through our collection of prestigious cleanup programs we love all and serve all, so cultural competency is key.

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute beach cleanups at locations around Santa Monica Bay
  • Schedule and coordinate volunteers, load/unload/drive company truck with supplies, set up and break down cleanup supplies at the beach site(s), check-in attendees on-site, lead the educational and safety talk for corporate groups, communicate with clients as a representative of Heal the Bay
  • Calculate beach cleanup totals (number of total participants, pounds of trash collected, number of cigarette butts collected, etc.)
  • Support Outreach Department as needed
  • Help with inventory and upkeep/maintenance of supplies/equipment
  • Support other program offerings such as, but not limited to, representing us at community fairs/festivals, giving presentations, Aquarium offerings, Earth Month, and other programming

Experience and Skills Required

  • Must have a valid CA driver’s license
  • Must be comfortable driving a full-size pickup truck
  • Strong desire to share a passion for Heal the Bay’s mission and the beach
  • Strong desire to protect our Bay
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, with public speaking experience
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team
  • Ability to work effectively with the diverse communities of Los Angeles County

Physical Demands

  • The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms
  • Drive full-size pick-up truck and load/unload the bed of the truck
  • Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and carry across the sand
  • Works outside and in heat, sun, and other weather conditions

Hours and Compensation

$17.50 – $18.50 an hour
This is a non-exempt, part-time position. The weekly schedule will average between 15-20 hours. Must be able to work as needed, including evenings and weekends.

About the Position

The Marine Protected Area Program Coordinator is a full-time position in the Science and Policy department. This position reports to the Coastal and Marine Scientist and is responsible for managing Heal the Bay’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) program, which includes Heal the Bay’s MPA Watch program, a community science program to assess human use of MPAs, along with MPA advocacy, monitoring, education, and outreach.

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all aspects of the MPA Watch Community Science Program including advocacy, education, outreach, and community involvement
  • Oversee all aspects of volunteer recruitment, retention, communication, data analysis, and management for the MPA Watch program
  • Plan and lead MPA Watch training sessions in the classroom and in the field
  • Draft and send the monthly MPA Watch Volunteer newsletter, including development and design of written and visual content
  • Plan and lead the MPA Watch partner community science projects and events as needed
  • Hire, train, and mentor MPA Watch volunteers and interns
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control checks on volunteer surveys, review surveys, and perform data management and analysis
  • Actively participate in MPA Watch meetings
  • With guidance of the Coastal and Marine Scientist, assist in key advocacy initiatives with MPA policy and science management agencies
  • Assist with grant administration, including grant tracking, reporting, and budgeting
  • Support educational and outreach campaigns around key coastal and marine policy issues, including but not limited to beach cleanups, tabling events, and public lectures
  • Distill policy and technical information into easily understandable written materials (FAQs, blogs) and oral presentations

Experience and Skills

  • Strong passion for Heal the Bay’s mission and a love for the environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in marine science, environmental science, coastal ecology, or related field is required; applicants with equivalent experience will also be considered
  • Background and interest in coastal issues/coastal and ocean policy, specifically Marine Protected Areas preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, with public speaking experience
  • Experience with data collection and/or analysis is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, project planning skills, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Travel throughout the Los Angeles area and a valid driver’s license is required. Occasional travel to Sacramento and other areas of California may also be required
