Mission

Our mission is to bring seafood lovers  together for a day of fun and community on the historic Santa Monica Pier, celebrate the city’s best dining offerings, and raise funds for Heal the Bay.  OFF THE HOOK is 100% free of Single-Use Plastics in an effort to help preserve our local ocean and beaches for future generations.

Plastic pollution prevention is a pillar of Heal the Bay’s environmental work.

Plastic enters our food chain when animals ingest everything from micro plastics to plastic bags and slowly makes its way up to humans. Over the course of a lifetime, the average person will unknowingly consume more than 40 pounds of plastic.  Microplastics have been found in human blood, heart tissue, placentas, and even breast milk. So its important that events like Off the Hook work to stop plastic at its source, and the first step is going 100% single use plastic free.

Every year California taxpayers shell out an estimated $420M each year to clean up and prevent plastic pollution from fouling our public places.

Heal the Bay volunteers removed move than 19K lbs. of trash from Los Angeles County Beaches, Waterways and neighborhoods on Coastal Cleanup Day a few weeks ago, much of that refuse is single use plastics.

Although we are celebrating many plastic wins this season—such as an updated bag ban just signed into law, comprehensive plastic pollution reduction plans approved unanimously by the city council, and the removal of 9.5 tons of trash from our coastline on September 21st—plastic is still choking our oceans. But there are lots of ways the public can help. You can go to healthebay.org to learn how to support our advocacy and even join a beach cleanup to protect what you love.
