To fulfill our mission, we use science, education, community action and advocacy. We educate people about the undersea wonders of Santa Monica Bay, the causes and impacts of water pollution, the need for an improved resilient water supply, and what everyone can do to make a difference. We reach over 150,000 people every year through our Heal the Bay Aquarium, beach cleanups and community outreach programs.

About the Role
Heal the Bay is looking for a full time Coastal Resources & Community Health Senior Manager to support our Science, Policy & Outreach Department.
The ideal candidate has a technical background and is a good communicator who is passionate about water quality, public health, community outreach, and environmental justice. The Coastal Resources & Community Health Senior Manager works at the intersection of public health and the environment, focusing on our fish contamination education program, impacts of legacy pollutants, sustainable fisheries, and public health protection from bacterial water pollution.
The Coastal Resources & Community Health Senior Manager reports to the Associate Director of Campaigns and Outreach.
The Coastal Resources & Community Health Senior Manager leads a team of outreach staff and works closely with the Science, Outreach, Policy, and Aquarium staff at Heal
the Bay, since all departments participate in organizational campaigns. In addition to excellent teamwork and leadership, the Coastal Resources & Community Health Senior Manager maintains strong relationships with elected officials and government agencies. The Coastal Resources & Community Health Senior Manager must be an excellent communicator, team leader, and coalition builder.
Expectations & Responsibilities
- Develop and implement program goals for Angler Outreach Program (AOP), which targets education and outreach to anglers on fish contamination; creatively grow program to increase visibility and expand reach;
- Analyze data and write reports on Angler Outreach Program;
- Lead Heal the Bay’s advocacy work on ocean dumping of legacy pollutants; build and lead coalitions around this issue;
- Review documents, write comment letters, attend and testify at hearings;
- Develop and maintain relationships with local, state, and federal elected officials, their staffs, government agencies, community-based organizations, schools, and other stakeholders;
- Manage Heal the Bay’s Outreach staff focused on Community Health, including Angler Outreach team;
- Work with Water Quality Scientist and Sr. Beach & Watershed Programs Manager to develop and implement goals for increased outreach on our Beach and River Report Card Programs;
- Work with AD & SPO Director and Advancement department to identify funding opportunities; assist in grant proposal writing, grant tracking, and grant reporting;
- Represent Heal the Bay at public meetings, workshops, and community events;
- Participate in departmental and all staff meetings, as well as contribute to issue/campaign team.
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Passion for Heal the Bay’s mission and environmental health in southern California;
- Ability to communicate complex issues to communities and the public;
- Written and verbal fluency in Spanish;
- Strong background in environmental studies, public health, environmental policy, community outreach, community organizing, or related field; 3-5 years of experience in the field and/or university degree preferred in related field;
- Understanding of how environmental health is related to environmental justice , and equity;
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and ability to maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, fishing communities, and community groups;
- Excellent writing skills; experience with content creation for blogs and social media;
- Ability to inspire staff, volunteers, and partner groups about Heal the Bay’s science, policy and outreach work;
- Commitment to an organizational culture of equity and inclusion;
- Ability to excel under pressure and meet deadlines while balancing multiple projects;
- Excellent organizational, analytical, project management, problem solving and communication skills.

Compensation
This is a full-time, non-exempt position $25 – 27/hourly based on experience.
Benefits
Dental, medical, health insurance, and vacation benefits are included as part of employment. Heal the Bay will cover 90% of benefits. In accordance with California Labor Law, employee will be eligible to receive up to 72 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year, after completing 90 days of employment. All Heal the Bay recognized Holidays will be compensated in accordance to time worked.
Schedule
Participation in some weekend and evening events, as well as regional and statewide travel, are necessary. Due to COVID-19, we are currently working from home but will transition back to working from our Santa Monica office once it is safe to do so. Heal the Bay offers a dynamic work environment with highly motivated colleagues including other staff and volunteers.
Physical Demands
The employee is occasionally required to: work in outdoor conditions, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and navigate local piers. All piers are wheelchair accessible.
